Astoria Homes
Offers Energy Saving Tips for Winter
Weather
(Las Vegas) – As
winter embarks upon us, Astoria Homes
is offering tips to keep homes warm in
the cool weather while also saving money
in energy costs.
Sia Howe, director of
Marketing for Astoria Homes, said homeowners
can take a variety of energy-saving measures
in the wintertime. They include:
- Turn down your thermostat.
For every degree you lower your heat,
you’ll save up to 5% on heating
costs.
- Wear a sweater or other warm clothes. This will allow you to set your thermostat
at a lower temperature.
- Clean or replace furnace filters monthly. Dirty filters restrict airflow.
By keeping furnace and filters clean and properly adjusted, you can save up
to 5% in heating costs.
- Insulate your water heater. Although newer hot water tanks may have good
internal insulation, using jacket insulation can lead to savings up to 10%
on water heating costs. Be sure to leave the air intake vent uncovered when
insulating a gas water heater.
- Install a programmable thermostat. Setback thermostats can save up to 15%
on energy costs.
- Close vents and doors to unused rooms. You may also want to keep your closet
doors closed, as there is no need to heat them.
- Check your exterior doors. If you can see light or can feel air coming in
around them, you probably need to replace the thresholds or door sweeps.
“These are good
ways to help Southern Nevada residents
have a warm and happy winter season without
worrying about exorbitant energy bills
and conserving energy,” Howe said.
All Astoria’s
new homes have ENERGY STAR® features,
